Habitual Success: Key Strategies for ADF Training Preparation

Embarking on a journey towards the Australian Defence Force (ADF) is not just about a decision. It's about transforming your lifestyle, one habit at a time. In this guide, we'll dive into four crucial areas: nutrition, exercise consistency, training as a lifestyle, and morning routines.
Let's get you ready for the ADF, not just for the day you enlist, but for a lifetime of success.

1. Nutrition - One Meal at a Time

1. Starting with Breakfast
Picture this: you had a late night out, but the next morning, you still start your day with a nutritious breakfast that's aligned with your goal of getting into the ADF. Starting with just one meal at a time will allow you to build a good habit. The self fulfilment you'll gain from achieving that one simple thing every single day will empower you to keep at it. That's the power of habit. Whether it's a smoothie, oats, or eggs, make your breakfast healthy and consistent. It's your fuel for the day, and more importantly, the foundation of a disciplined dietary habit. Just get your breakfast right every single day, no matter what! Regardless of the circumstances.

2. Progressing to Other Meals
Once breakfast becomes a part of your daily routine, extend this discipline to your lunch and dinner. Remember, it's not about overhauling your diet overnight but about making gradual, sustainable changes. As you conquer each meal, you're not just eating better; you're building a mindset that thrives on consistency.

2. Consistent Small Efforts in Exercise

1. Daily Small Exercises
If the concept of following a full program is a bit overwhelming for you at the stage of your journey then start small. Just like nutrition. Simply focus on one thing. If you are struggling with Push-Ups - Try this: do three push-ups every time you pass your kitchen bench. It's about small, frequent efforts. You might not notice the difference immediately, but imagine this - 450 quality push-ups in a month! These small victories accumulate into significant gains.

2. Sustainable Exercise Routine
Balance is key. Don't forget to stretch and give yourself a couple of days of rest each week. It's not about pushing to the extreme but creating a habit that's sustainable. Remember, the goal is consistent improvement, not burning out.

3. Training as a Lifestyle Choice

1. Establishing a Personal Training Baseline
What's your non-negotiable training regime? For me, it's two strength and two cardio sessions a week. This is what you call your GPP (general physical preparedness). Your baseline of training. Establish your baseline and stick to it, rain or shine. This routine becomes part of your identity, something you uphold no matter where your service career takes you.

2. Training as a Lifelong Commitment

Embrace training not just as a pre-ADF requirement but as a lifelong commitment. It's now part of who you are. FOR LIFE!! This mindset ensures that even during life's rough patches, you emerge fit, strong, and ready for any challenge. There will be some extremely challenging times throughout your application process and career. So, ensuring you have a baseline will be your vessel that keeps you on track.

4. The Importance of a Morning Routine

1. Setting Up Your Day for Success
How you start your day sets the tone for the rest. Take a leaf from my book: a pinch of sea salt, a swing under my mango tree, and a bottle of cold water. It's about sun, fresh air, and hydration. Stretch a bit, and you're ready to seize the day!

2. Creating Your Own Morning Ritual
Now, it's your turn. Craft a morning routine that wakes you up, nourishes you, and gets you in the right mindset. It could be yoga, meditation, or just enjoying a quiet cup of tea. Make it yours, and make it a habit.

Here's mine:
  • Wake up around 5:30/6:00,
  • Pinch of sea salt on my tongue to help with water retention throughout the day,
  • Drink 500ml of cold water while standing outside in the morning sun,
  • Full body stretches for 5 minutes,
  • Cold shower,
  • Straight into focused work.

Conclusion

As you prepare for the ADF, remember, it's about building habits that last a lifetime. Start small, be consistent, and gradually, these habits will become part of who you are - a resilient, disciplined, and focused individual, ready for the challenges of the ADF and beyond.
